Old Hindi Actresses Biography

Hema Malini's
Hema Malini was the second South Indian actress after Vyjayantimala to be a major Hindi film star. Popularly know as Dream Girl. At her peak she wielded such strong commercial clout that actors like Dev Anand and Rajesh Khanna had to turn to her to give them that much wanted hit. When Dev Anand's films in the 70s particularly those with hema malini crashed, Amir Garib (1974) with Hema Malini was a hit. When Rajesh Khanna's films started sinking, her Prem Nagar(1974) with him gave him a new lease of life albeit temporarily.
Ironically her career almost ended before it began. Her first director Shridhar threw her out of a Tamil film he was directing in 1964, saying she had no star appeal! Hema resolved she would make it big where it mattered the most - Bollywood.

Jaya Bachchan's
Of all the actress' of Bollywood's bouffant 70s era Jaya Bachchan (Bhaduri) would be the one voted; "Most Likely to be the Girl you Take Home to Meet Mom and Dad". She has that genuine and sincere quality that the parent's love to see.
There is a fortitude and level-headedness in her gaze and demeanor. She displays a silent refined non-plussed intelligence. The plot my be throwing Jaya for a loop through seemingly insurmountable odds but the quiet gaze of her often downcast eyes presents us with a mind actively (internally) searching for solutions as opposed to a spirit victimized and submissive. One could misinterpret her demeanor as submissive and victimized but there is decorum in her manner that transcends such stereotypes and elevates it to a silent dignity backed by integity of spirit.

Mala Sinha's
Mala Sinha, Bollywood actress, singer and dancer. She was one of the top screen beauties of the 'Classic' 1950s period and the Mod 60s. With her very modern facial features she transitioned with great success from the glamor of the 50s golden era to the 'studied artificiality' of the 60s pop era. Her character always had to be the crux of the story.
Today, her unforgettable performances (Pyaasa, Phir Subah Hogi, Gumraah), have been relegated to the shade, while her weakness for over-the-top, mawkish melodrama is remembered. Born a Nepali Christian, the young Mala was a chinky-eyed

Zeenat Aman 's
From portraying the gutsy hippie in Hare Rama Hare Krishna to the sensuous nightclub singer in Qurbani to the sex symbol in Satyam Shivam Sundaram Zeenat Aman was the embodiment of exotic yet earthly Indian sensuality. Born on 19 November 1951, in Germany, and nicknamed Babushka the ‘laila’ of Qurbani shot to fame with her first film itself. With a string of beauty pageant victories (she was Miss India 1971 and Miss Asia 1971) Zeenat was one of the biggest hot-steppers on the ramp till Dev Anand, who was on the lookout for a chic vibrant debutante in his film Hare Ram Hare Krishna gave her a new lease of life.
Her first on screen appearance instantly catapulted her to the upper echelons of sensuality and success. Her on screen erotica and off screen mystique sent her zooming through the popularity charts, carving a unique image for herself. Not just an epitome of beauty, she was ensconced in an aura of sophistication and flawlessness.

Nirupa Roy's
In her cotton saris with her make-up made to look like dark rings around her eyes Nirupa Roy embodied the 'every mother' of 70s Hindi popular cinema. Her portrayal of the mother was so iconic that actress to this day refer to a 'Nirupa Roy' type character when attempting to give an explanation of the type of part they are playing in a film.
In the 70s and 80s Amitabh Bachchan's, angry young man was her and her son alone, or so it seemed. If one was asked who the angry young man's mother was, one could only say Nirupa Roy. She played Amitabh's mother in seven films.
Nirupa Roy began her film career in the 1940s and became famous portraying goddess in mythologicals. One of her most famous roles of the period was as Satyavan Savitri in a film of the same name. It is interesting in light of her later career that the character, a goddess from the Mahabharata is both a queen and long suffering mother.

Reena Roy's
Reena Roy was launched in Zaroorat (1972) by one of the most controversial directors of his time - BR Ishara. The film had all the hot scenes and thought-provoking bold lines Ishara was famous for, and Reena became known as the 'zaroorat’ girl. Her choice of films in the next few years reflected that very ‘neediness’, as she struggled in B grade movies with feeble scripts and faltering heroes.
Her lively performance in Jaise Ko Taisa (1973) and Zakhmee (1975) were noticed by all, but it was the huge success of Nagin (1976) that bought Reena fame and recognition. Playing the title role of the deadly 'nagin', she avenges the death of her lover by killing five leading male-stars, one after another. Inspired by its success, the director, Raj Kumar Kohli, looked no further for the heroine of his next star-studded horror movie, Jaani Dushman (1979). Thereafter, the Kohli-Roy combination continued to give Bollywood cinema some its greatest multi-starrers, including Muqabla (1979), Badle Ki Aag (1982), and Raaj Tilak (1984).

Sharmila Tagore's
The great-granddaughter of poet Rabindranath Tagore, Sharmila Tagore is one of the few true legendary actors of Indian cinema. Her career in movies spans the art films of Satyajit Ray, Bollywood extravaganzas, classic social dramas, and Indian parallel cinema. She is also considered of the most glamorous figures in the history of Indian Popular cinema.
Excerpt from IndiaInfo article, She was also a style setter. Her butterfly knot blouse, her style of making up, long eyelashes, her curvy dresses all became a fashion statement. In the mean time she also appeared on the cover of a magazine in two piece bikini which became the talk of the town.
Sharmila's and other Bollywood actresses' style and dress had a huge influence on every young Indian woman of the 60s and 70s. Sharmila was a sensation in 60s and 70s Bollywood. Much could and should be written (*I'm working of a paper right now) about the 'Bikini Photo' showing Sharmila in a two piece Western style bathing suit that was published in Indian magazines in 1966

Tina Munim's
Certainly one of the most classically beautiful actresses to ever grace Hindi Popular cinema, Tina Munim exemplified the look of 1980s hip middle class youth. In fact, she was a magazine cover girl and international beauty pageant queen (or more technically princess) by the time she was 15 years old. Munim was one of the first Indian beauty queens to follow their pageant career with acting in Bollywood.

Vaijayantimala Bali's
Vyjayantimala was the first South Indian actress who made it as a national star and was one of the biggest ever Hindi Film female stars in a career lasting almost two decades. Besides her ability as an actress, which was considerable, her greatest legacy to Indian Cinema perhaps is that it has become a must for any aspiring actress in Indian Cinema to be an accomplished dancer. Vyjayantimala has always had the mandatory dance sequence in practically every film of hers evoking 'classical art' associations.

Babita's
Babita was a popular actress of Bollywood entertainers in the late 60s and 70s. Her older cousin was the beautiful Sadhana. For a period Babita vied for the top spot on the beauty charts of Hindi cinema. Her career matched her with all the top stars of the day.
