Her dad passed away when she was just 8 years old, and the family had to depend on her income, so she started acting on the silver screen as Baby Nanda. She went on to play character and 'sister' roles, which did get her some recognition, especially after the release of 'Bhabhi' and 'Chhoti Bahen'. She then went to star as the leading lady in 1961 in 'Hum Dono'. Thereafter she acted as a leading lady in many movies with 'Shor (1972) being the last one with Manoj Kumar. Very shy and almost introvert, Nanda kept to herself, and did not have any relationship. Even when cajoled by her brothers, and Waheeda, she refused to marry. Waheeda did convince her to marry film-maker Manmohan Desai, an engagement took place, but before the wedding could take place, Manmohan passed away
Today, surrounded by only close friends and family, she lives a plush & comfortable life in her sea-facing bungalow in Bombay.
Daughter of Master Vinayak and Meenaxi. Great-niece of Rajaram Vankudre Shantaram. Nanda was engaged to Manmohan Desai at the time of his death.
Her best friend is actress Waheeda Rehman, and they had co-starred together in Kala Bazar (1960).
As a child she was tutored at home by renowned school-teacher and Scouts Commissioner Gokuldas Vissomal Makhi.

Her biggest super-hits came at end of her career as the lead heroine in Ittefaq, The Train and Joru Ka Ghulam opposite Superstar Rajesh Khanna in increasing order of box-office revenue. These films earned more than her earlier hits opposite Shashi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Dev Anand, Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra.
